WHAT IS A BANK? • Bank is an institution that accepts deposits and make loans • Banks provide a system for an easy transfer of money from one person or company to another • Bank is an intermediary between a supplier of finances and their users
How do banks earn money? • „The spread“ – the difference between the interest rate pay for deposits and interest rate they receive on the loans they make • Interest on the securities they hold • Fees for customer services
Types of fees • Opening and closing an account • Running an account • Bank statements • Financial operations at the counter • Payments from your account • Consulting services • Home banking, internet banking • Withdrawals from ATM
TYPES OF BANKS • Saving banks • Commercial banks • Investment banks • Mortgage banks • Credit unions • Central banks
Saving banks • Are financial institutions which receive savings accounts only and pay interests to its depositors
Commercial banks • Privately – owned for profit institutions • Accept demands deposits • Make commercial loans • Offer related services
Investment banks • An individual or an institution that acts as an underwiter or agent for corporations and municipalities issuing securities • Do not accept deposits • Maintain broker/dealer operations • Offer advisory services to investors
Mortgage banks • offer long-term loans - mortgages • financing building or buying houses or flats • lower interest to be paid
Credit unions • A non-profit financial institution that is owned and operated entirely by its members • Provide financial services for their members, including saving and lending • Deposit is considered partial ownership in the credit union
Central banks • Have responsibility for issuing currency • Administer monetary policy • Hold member banks´ deposits • Facilitate the nation´s banking industry
Bank staff • Manager • Branch manager • Cashiers / tellers • FX tellers • Retail bankers • Loan representatives • Sales assistant
Departments in a bank • Headquarters • Credit administration division • International and domestic banking operations • Treasury and accounting • Finance operations division (FX, money market) • Investment division
