  1. BRAKES: A Big Deal CDL TESTING --- Training Tips Brought to You by NYAPT A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL REGULATIONS OR GUIDELINES

  2. THE MANUAL! We think it’s important that you are aware of • the actual language before we go any further…So, • The slides 3-4-5 share the actual text from the CDL Drivers Manual • (CDL-10) as distributed by NYS DMV. The Manual can be found on the NYS DMV website at: https://dmv.ny.gov/commercial-drivers/new-york-state-commercial-drivers-manual A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. 3. CDL MANUAL AND TESTINGPage #11-4 • Air Brake Check (Air Brake Equipped Vehicles Only) • Failure to perform all three components of the air brake check correctly will result in automatic failure of the vehicle inspection test. Air brake safety devices vary. However, this procedure is designed to see that any safety device operates correctly as air pressure drops from normal to a low air condition. • For safety purposes, in areas where an incline is present, you will use wheel chocks during the air brake check. • The proper procedures for inspecting the air brake system are as follows: • Static Check. Shut off the engine; chock your wheels, if necessary; release the tractor protection valve and parking brake (push in); fully apply the foot brake and hold it for one minute. Check the air gauge to see if the air pressure drops more than three pounds in one minute (single vehicle) or four pounds in one minute (combination vehicle). A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. 4. CDL MANUAL AND TESTING • Check Low Air Pressure Warning Device. Turn the electrical power on and begin fanning off the air pressure by rapidly applying and releasing the foot brake. Low air warning devices (buzzer, light, flag) should activate before air pressure drops below 60 psi. • Check Protection Valve and Spring Brakes Activation. Continue to fan off the air pressure. At approximately 40 psi on a tractor-trailer combination vehicle, the tractor protection valve and parking brake valve should close (pop out). On other combination vehicle types and single vehicle types, the parking brake valve should close (pop out). • Check Air Compressor and Governed Cut-Off. Build the air pressure to governed cut-off (100-125 psi). A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL REGULATIONS OR GUIDELINES

  5. CDL MANUAL AND TESTING • Service Brake Check • You will be required to check the application of air or hydraulic service brakes. This procedure is designed to determine that the brakes are working correctly and that the vehicle does not pull to one side or the other. • Pull forward at 5 mph, apply the service brake and stop. • Check to see that the vehicle does not pull to either side and that it stops when brake is applied. 6. AND NOW…A REVIEW OF THESTEP-BY-STEP PROCESS A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL REGULATIONS OR GUIDELINES

  7. STEP ONE: CHOCKING • Tell the examiner that you are going to chock the wheels of the school bus…that is, if your vehicle is on an incline • Chock the wheels, again, only necessary IF your vehicle is on an incline • Get back on your bus • With your key in the “ON/ACCESORY” position (but with the engine OFF), wait for the PSI to reach 120 foreach of the pressure gauges A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. 8. STEP TWO: ANNOUNCE START • Announce to your examiner that you are starting the static brake test • It’s important that both the examiner and you know that you are now in test mode and prepared A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL REGULATIONS OR GUIDELINES

  9. STEP THREE: PARKING BRAKE • Push in the YELLOW parking brake nob on the dash • Tell the examiner that the Parking Brake Side is CHARGED A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL REGULATIONS OR GUIDELINES

  10. STEP FOUR: SERVICE BRAKES • NOW apply your SERVICE BRAKES and HOLD • Once this has been done, tell the examiner that both the service and the parking brakes are CHARGED A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL REGULATIONS OR GUIDELINES

  11. STEP FIVE: GAUGE CHECKS • Announce to the examiner that you are waiting for ONE MINUTE and watching the pressure gauges • You should explain to the examiner that you are making sure that the air pressure does not drop more than 3 pounds in that one minute A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. 12. STEP SIX: PUMP DOWN SERVICE BRAKES • After ONE MINUTE is over, you want to PUMP DOWN your SERVICE brake until you have the lights buzzer (on the dash) and the wig-wag drops. • This should occur when the PSI is approximately 60 pounds per square inch on the air gauges located on the dash. • STOP and let the examiner know that this has been reached. 13. STEP SEVEN: PUMP DOWN PARKING BRAKE • Continue pumping down the service break until the yellow parking break knob pops out.  This will be at approximately 40psi on the air gauges on the dash.  • Stop and let the examiner know this. 14. STEP EIGHT: STARTING THE BUS • Now tell the examiner that you are starting your bus and do so.  • Build up the air pressure until it stops (you will hear your air dryer purge or the needle will stop climbing). • This will be at 120-125psi on the dash gauges. 15. STEP NINE: IT’S OVER! • When this is complete, tell the examiner that the static break test is done. • And give yourself a round of applause for doing it correctly! STEP NINE: IT’S OVER! A RESOURCE FOR MEMBERS OF NYAPT. DOES NOT REPRESENT OFFICIAL REGULATIONS OR GUIDELINES

  16. HOPE THIS HELPS! • Before we go… • We have shared here the basics of the CDL Drivers Manual and we have done a step-by-step review of the Brake Test process. • Keep in mind, again, that this is only a resource and not a regulation or an official or authorized guide to the test. It’s important that you work closely with your driver candidates to ensure they know the steps they must take in testing as well as in real-time driving experiences. • Good luck to all! 17. IN CLOSING… • We hope that this short power-point explanation has been helpful. • Remember this is a resource for you and NOT an official DMV or FMCSA slide show and you need to focus on the manual and sound training. • Good luck on your road test! • See you on the highways and by-ways! • Just be safe out there!
