About 40 plankton or benthic samples, collected in Albanian littoral habitats (Tushemishti, Pogradeci, Guri-Kuq, Pojska, Lini, Driloni springs, etc.), between 1993-2003 • Cleaning of diatom frustules: boiling with HClcc and H2SO4cc (Krammer & Lange-Bertalot, 1986-91) and mounted in microscopic slides using Naphrax (index 1.69) • Examinations with the microscope LEICA DML (objective 63x PL APO)and determinations followedup Krammer & Lange-Bertalot (1986-2001). • Samples, permanent slides and photos were deposited in Section of Botany, Tirana University; others were part of the collection of Prof. Dr. H. Lange-Bertalot, Botanical Institute, J. W. Goethe University, Frankfurt/M. • From the structure of the epiphytic diatoms, the trophic state was calculated, using the formula of Zelinka & Marvan (1961) and discussed previously by Miho & Lange-Bertalot (2003) Frankfurt, 2000

More than 380 taxa were found in Albanian part: • About 260 taxa were in common with what was found by other researchers • 120 were not recorded before in Ohrid • More than 90 taxa belong to the red list of almost extinct, endangered, strongly endangered, or extremely rare species for Central Europe (Lange-Bertalot, 1996) • About 25 taxa have been considered interesting or even new. Six of them were described as new by Lange-Bertalot (2001), like Aneumastus albanicus, A. rosettae, A. humboltianus, Navicula pseudoppugnata, N. parahasta and N. hastatula

Floristic considerations: • Lake Ohrid represent unique ecosystems even from microscopic algae point of view, especially diatoms -More than 550 species and intraspecific taxa of diatoms (35 centricae and about 520 pennatae),seems to belong to the Lake as a whole -Lake Ohrid is distinguished for having a high presence (about ¼) of rare and tertiary relict species of diatoms, like Cyclotella fottii, C. hustedtii,Cocconeis robusta, Diploneis heisingeriae, Gomphoneis transsylvanica, Gomphonema irroratum, Navicula perturbata, N. jakovlevicii,Surirella helissella,S. iconella,S. imbuta, etc.
Ecological considerations • Most of the species are oligotraphentic, mainly present in planktonic samples, growing up only in oligotrophic waters with low nutrient level • Tolerant, mesotrophentic or eutrophentic species have been observed in littoral habitats, showing certain pollution from human activity • Assessment of microscopic algae, especially diatoms, can give a very good view of natural state of the habitats, of their trophy, and the influence of human activities • Join the efforts towards the protection of water quality in Ohrid and Prespa, and promote a sustainable development in whole area
Acknowledgements • The study is completed thanks to the support of the German Foundation Alexander von Humboldt (AvH), which sponsored the one-year visit of Dr. Miho in Germany, beside Prof. H.
