The Ultra-Short Range (USR) Opportunity Date: 2016/01/19 Authors: SangHyun Chang, et al. (Samsung)
Abstract • The past decade has seen a flurry of activities in the 60 GHz-band, including the IEEE 802.11ad/WiGig standardization activity, as well as commercialization activities for 60 GHz products. • However, the 60 GHz market is yet to take off. • Some of the issues that have been pointed out include power budget, absence of a killer application, form factor, fragile radio links (orientation changes could disrupt a link), polarization, distance, etc. • While commercialization efforts for mainstream 60 GHz (WiGig) technologies continue, an interesting opportunity (ultra-short range wireless docking) can be considered. • Today, we would like to discuss the Ultra-Short Range (USR) wireless docking usage model as a candidate mobile phone application.
