  1. The Ultra-Short Range (USR) Opportunity Date: 2016/01/19 Authors: SangHyun Chang, et al. (Samsung)

  2. Abstract • The past decade has seen a flurry of activities in the 60 GHz-band, including the IEEE 802.11ad/WiGig standardization activity, as well as commercialization activities for 60 GHz products. • However, the 60 GHz market is yet to take off. • Some of the issues that have been pointed out include power budget, absence of a killer application, form factor, fragile radio links (orientation changes could disrupt a link), polarization, distance, etc. • While commercialization efforts for mainstream 60 GHz (WiGig) technologies continue, an interesting opportunity (ultra-short range wireless docking) can be considered. • Today, we would like to discuss the Ultra-Short Range (USR) wireless docking usage model as a candidate mobile phone application. SangHyun Chang, et al. (Samsung)

  3. The Use Case Video stream transfer & Data transfer Wireless Power Charging Side View • USR Wireless Docking SangHyun Chang, et al. (Samsung)

  4. Usage Model: Mobile Phone USR Wireless Docking • Usage Scenario Assumptions: • The 11ay interfaces are deployed both in a smartphone and in a (wireless charging) pad. • The smartphone is placed on the pad for USR communication. • The pad has wired/wireless connection to peripherals (e.g., a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, etc.) • Applications: • Remote Desktop • Cloud PC • Gigabit Docking w/ Wireless Charging Service • Interactive Game Docking Station • Traffic conditions: • Only one smartphone device can be placed on a wireless docking pad. • Low latency video stream transfer support for peripheral inputs. SangHyun Chang, et al. (Samsung)

  5. Requirements • Interactive Game Docking Station • Latency: ≤ 10ms (E2E) • Data rate: ≥ 1Gbps (low latency codec w/ compression rate1/3~1/4) • Remote Desktop/Cloud PC • Latency: ≤ 50ms (E2E) • Data rate: ≥ 1Gbps (visually lossless for text/line) • Gigabit Docking w/ Wireless Charging Service • Alignment-free placement on the pad • Low Power Consumption • ≤ 200mW for peak data rate • ≤ 0.5mW for discovery phase • Form Factor • Close to today’s NFC • Range • ≤ 0.1 m Wireless Docking Pad(Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse/LAN) Wireless Cloud Office SangHyun Chang, et al.
