The Problem • Threefold increase in overweight children and teens in last two decades • 25% of children are either overweight or at risk of overweight • 10-fold increase in number of children with Type II diabetes in last 5 years • Affects normal growth and development of children Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

The Problem • Tracks into adulthood: 70-80% overweight adolescents become obese adults • Results in $117 billion in costs and 300,000 deaths annually • Annual youth (6-17 years old) obesity-related hospital costs increased from $35 million to $127 million from 1979 -81 to 1997-99 Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

Encourage adults to be role models by drinking water, milk and fruit juice (instead of soft drinks) and encouraging children and teens to do the same.
