What’s the Big Deal? “And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.”- Mark 1:5 • The Wilderness: a really Bad Location! • Yet It Was An Exciting Event: • The first prophet in over 400 years! • His Message: At last! It’s Here! God’s Kingdom! • A Fulfillment of all the Old Testament Prophecies!

First Things First: Baptism • Baptism of John (1:4,5) • How to get accepted by God. • Jews thought acceptance was automatic. • Baptism was for Gentiles • Symbolic of the need for moral cleansing. • John: “You need to be forgiven too!” • Still today: everyone does! • Means Repentance: a change of mind. • Not a change of behavior! • A change in your relationship with God. • Synonymous with Christian water baptism today.

First Things First: Baptism Too Cool! • Baptism of John (1:4,5) • Baptism of the Holy Spirit (1:8) • What Jesus Christ came to offer. • A profound change: 1 Cor. 12:13 • Placed inside the Body of Christ. • Able to “drink the Holy Spirit” • The source of all New Testament riches! • True unity with other people! • A deep-seated relationship with Jesus Christ! • Empowered for real change! Impacting others! • A Fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies! (Ez.36:26f) • What an honored position to be in! (Eph.1:13,14) Matthew 11:11 (NASB-U) "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”
