4. Cal/OSHA Program
5. Scope Risk of occurrence of heat illness.
Emergency Standard does not exclude application of other sections of Title 8, such as the IIPP, drinking water, first aid, etc.
6. Application All outdoor places of employment.
Indoor places are still covered under the IIPP, first aid, etc.
7. Definitions Heat Illness: A serious medical condition resulting from the body’s inability to cope with a particular heat load, includes:
Heat cramps
Heat exhaustion
Heat syncope, and
Heat stroke.
8. Definitions Environmental risk factors include:
air temperature, relative humidity, radiant heat, conductive heat sources, etc
workload severity and duration
protective clothing and personal protective equipment.
9. Definitions Acclimatization: A temporary adaptation of the body to work in the heat that occurs gradually when a person is exposed to it.
Occurs over 4-10 days, helps the body better adapt (better sweating ability, less stress on the heart, body temp more stable, etc).
Less acclimatization = greater risk

11. Definitions Shade: Blockage of direct sunlight. One indicator - when objects do not cast a shadow
Preventative Recovery Period: Period of time to recover from the heat in order to prevent heat illness.
