Definition of Terms Cultural Studies Cultural studies has been most interested in how groups with least power practically develop their own readings of, and uses for, cultural products –in fun, in resistance, or to articulate their own identity (Simon During, The Cultural Studies Reader 1999, p.6). Semiotics (study of image: denotation and conotation, signifier and signified)
A.R Habib, Literary Criticism from Plato to the Present 2011).

Technology (in the form of media and in the film industry) has aspects of social and ideological discourse. • Technology’s communicative power/language: myth making machinery that can capture and manipulate minds. • “ZsaZsaZaturnah”
Technology in the form of Pinoysuperhero films is considered as art, reflection of the society, and also as a ‘tool’ in subverting the ideological forces (another aspect or nature of technology) inscribed by the dominant film industry (Hollywood). “Darna” “Captain Barbell”
Film, from a mere source of entertainment, now also speaks for the society and culture where it is coming from (issue: “mediation”). • Film captures another discourse such as subversion of dominant forces • Film, as a form of S&T, highlights the power and influence of Media and Popular Culture (as ISA) in the society.
