FR: TheBankisapowerhouse space,andJeannineBraden isgreatto workwith.I’mexcited tobe showingworkthere,bothfromtheVisibleLight seriesandacoupleofnew paintings. TG:Intheareaknownas“TheVault”youhavetwolargecanvassesoneithersideof theentrancetoawalk-invintagebankvault. Canyoutell usabit about thoseworks? FR: Thosetwo worksarethefirst canvassesI’mshowing publiclyfrommynew project,“ILoveYouAnd ThatMakesMe God.”Oneof theelementsof thenewwork isinteraction withsettingsofpotential worship,includingfinancial. TG:Whatotherlocationsareyouusingforthiswork? FR: Anyplace thathousesanobject ofworship isfairgame.Strip clubs,churches,vice-driven advertisements,etc. TG:How doesthepublicartinteract withthevideoinstallationyou’recreating? FR: Insomewaysit’sareaction.Thelevelof intimacyofthevideoproject isso intense,sopersonal,thatitdemandedanoppositeresponse.Thisproject encounters dialogueatthedirectone-on-onelevel,and asanindeterminatepublicconversation. TG:Someof thosesettings– strip clubs,cathedrals–might beseenasa bitcontroversial,right?FR: Sure.But again,thegoal oftheprojectistoinvitedialogue,not toimposemeaning.UnlessI get thechancetoprojectitontothewallsof theVatican.[Laughs] TG:Withacentralstatement as provocativeas“ILoveYouAndThatMakesMe God,”faith,orbelief,hastobepart oftheconversationinsomeway. FR: It’s beenaridetoexplore. TG:Whatisyourexperienceof thefaithaspect ofthe work,personally? FR: TheBible,Torah, Quran–booksofscience? They’retextsof pervasivecultural impact. The

  2. project isnot about religion,atleastnot inanyconventional sense. TG:Whatshapeisthevideoinstallationaspect going totake? FR: I’mworking right nowon developingafewdifferent models. Oneisasmall-scaleinstallationbox,designedwith interiormonitorsand mirroredglass. Theviewerapproaches byputting theirheadinsidetheboxtoview thework.It’sveryintimate,and meanttobea bituncomfortable. The secondmodel isa large-scaledesign,with dual-monitorprojection spanningaspaceofabout 800 cubicft.It’s technically involved. TG:You’vementioned a lot ofsocial themes inconjunction withtheproject.Ifyouhadto summarizethe work,whatis“ILoveYouAnd ThatMakesMeGod”about?
