AFRICA • Are there streams and rivers that they like to be around? In Africa, the summer seasons have little rain, so streams and rivers are helpful. However, in the spring, fall and winter, there is an abundant amount of rain. • Do gorillas primarily want to live in shade to be cool or in the open sun? The temperature year round is in the 80-90s so they are more active in the early part of the day and at night. During the hot time they like to sit around and try to stay cool. Gorillas Eat… • What kinds of food do gorillas like to eat? Do they eat plants, insects, other animals? They like to eat large fruits, leaves, and insects. They eat about 97% different species of plants. Of their total diet, 67% is fruit, 17% is seeds, leaves, stems, and the remaining part includes ants, termites, caterpillars.
Behavior/Family Patterns • Do gorillas live by themselves or do live in groups? How do they interact with others? Gorillas tend to live in small groups. A male gorilla heads the group of 5-12 females. Different groups tend to stay away from each other to avoid confrontation. If an encounter occurs, the male will beat his chest, charge, or beat the plants. They will usually not fight; they will just try to show their strength. Also, the females will stick with their male and back him 100%.
