Feeding Habits The red panda is an omnivore, which means that it eats both plants and meat. Like the giant panda, the red panda primarily eats bamboo leaves (and occasionally shoots). They will also eat acorns, blossoms, berries, seeds, fungi, lizards, young birds, small mice (and other rodents), eggs and insects. In the summer time the red panda may also eat fruits as part of its diet. The retrieve their food at night, most of it from trees or by foraging for it on land. After finding food they eat it by using their front paws to put it in their mouths. To drink water the red panda puts its hand in the water source and then licks its paw.
Behavioural Characteristics Red pandas are solitary animals that live alone, except in breeding season and the time period that the mother is with her cubs . They are territorial and rarely ever live in groups of families after mating. They are crepuscular, which means that they are mostly active in the early hours of the morning and late evening. Red pandas usually sleep at noon in shady treetops stretched out and open. In cold weather they sleep curled up with their tails covering their faces for warmth. Red pandas can only tolerate temperatures up to 25°c, with the ideal temperature for living between 17-15°c. Red pandas are excellent tree climbers and move about the tall branches with ease and agility. They spend most of their time in trees unless foraging. The trees are of great use to the red panda. They use them as a source of food, a place to hide from ground dwelling predators and to sunbathe in the winter months.
They make tweeting and whistling sounds to communicate with one another but for most of the time they remain silent. Grooming is done by the animal licking its paws and then rubbing it on its body (similar to cats) or by rubbing against trees or rocks. They often patrol their territory, marking it out with excrement which contains a scent (similar to musk). When threatened, red pandas will try and flee until they are out of reach from predators. If they can no longer flee they will stand up on their hind legs to try and appear larger and reveal sharp claws which can be used to inflict wounds. Predators include snow leopards, martens and humans.
Habitat Red pandas are found in temperate, high mountain, bamboo forests in southern Asia (some parts of China, Nepal, Himalayas, Bhutan Myanmar and India ). They are only naturally found in this small region (roughly 142,00km2, only have of which is inhabited with red pandas.) They like to live in mild temperatures (10 to 25°c) with very little seasonal change. They like to live in forests with deciduous trees (trees that shed leaves annually) and conifers (trees that have seeds in cones, found in colder climates), at 2,200-4,800m altitude. Red pandas also inhabit areas that have a large bamboo understory, as it their main food source. Where did it Originate From? The red panda originates from the mountains of the Eastern Himalayas and parts of southwestern China.

What makes it a mammal? The red panda is classified to be in the class mammalia, which means it is mammal. To qualify as a mammal you must posses some characteristics. The animal must: • be a vertebrate (meaning that it has a backbone). • be endothermic (produces its own body heat). • have hair or fur. • have three middle ear bones (malleus, incus, stapes). • have a mammary gland (if female) which is what produces milk to feed the young. Red pandas posses all these qualities, most certainly making them a mammal. Red panda skeleton
What other animals belong to the same genus? The red panda is the only animal left surviving in its genus, aiuluris. It is also the only animal that is alive it its family aiuluridae. Its closest living relative is the raccoon, which has similar physical features. The red panda is also distantly related to the giant panda bear, in which it shares its name, even though it is not a bear. Note the physical similarities between the red panda (right) and the raccoon (left).
Conservation Status Since 2008 the red panda has been classified as vulnerable by the IUCN list of threatened species. It is estimated that the population of red pandas has dropped 40% over the last 50 years and is continuing to decline. It is estimated that there is approximately 10,000 left in the wild. Poaching and loss of habitat are two threats that have an impact on the amount of red pandas in existence. The major threat being loss of habitat and deforestation. All of the main threats towards this species of animal are caused by humans. There are many organisation working to help the red pandas. Taronga Zoo and Central Park Zoo are two of the wildlife parks that have breeding programs established, with a new cub from Taronga zoo in 2011. WWF (World Wildlife Fund) has a program in which you can adopt a red panda and help donate to conserve their homes. Charity organisations such as Red Panda Network are solely devoted to the conservation of these beautiful creatures, that need to be [protected for future generations to enjoy.
