Integration Challenges ATN 2000 - London - Sept. 2000
System Accommodations • FANS-1/A and ATN Services will co-exist into the future • Different communications infrastructure • Different message definitions • but some mapping is possible • Operational and Service differences must be minimized • Accommodation possible on aircraft, ground, or both • Possibility of reduced benefits regionally • Under analysis in RTCA SC-189/EuroCAE WG-51 ATN 2000 - London - Sept. 2000
Lessons Learned (1) • Programmatic • Tight configuration management for successful interoperability • Close cooperation between the participating ATC Service Providers is required • Technology introduction quicker than modifications to operational procedures • Operational benefits not as early as planned ATN 2000 - London - Sept. 2000
Lessons Learned (2) • Human Factors • Pilot interface must be carefully designed • Adequate crew training is expensive but mandatory • Technical • Compatibility of air and ground navigation data base • Significant operational benefits accrue from tight interface with Flight Management System • ‘Auto-load’ of Route Clearances, etc. • High integrity and robust data link infrastructure required to support ATC data link safety requirements ATN 2000 - London - Sept. 2000
Conclusions • FANS-1/A ATC Data Link suitable for oceanic and remote geographic regions into the future • ATN ATC Data Link is NOT an immediate replacement for FANS-1/A • Supports different airspace needs • Supports different user mission needs • Successful ATC Data Link requires tight integration between Communication system and other avionics • CHI : ‘Pilot friendly interface’ • FMC : CPDLC integration with the ‘navigator’ ATN 2000 - London - Sept. 2000
