What is IRONY? (box 1) • Oh that’s so ironic! • Irony is the difference between what we expect or what seems suitable and what actually happens
Types of Irony (box 1) • There are 3 types of irony • Verbal (in Macbeth Act 3) • Dramatic (in Macbeth Act 1) • Situational
Verbal Irony (box 2) • When someone says one thing but means another • “Wow! Cool story, bro.” • Or “What a nice day we’re having!” while it’s storming outside • Lennox talking on page 153 • Also known as sarcasm • Verbal Irony
Dramatic Irony (box 3) • When the audience knows what the characters in the story don’t know. In Act I we knew that Macbeth was going to receive a promotion, but he did not know it.
Dramatic Irony (continued) • In a story, the wife plans a surprise party for her husband. The husband comes home to a dark house and says, “All I want is a quiet evening”. We know that there is a surprise coming and the husband does not.
Situational Irony (box 4) • An event that is contrary (opposite) to what you expected • Example: A firehouse catches on fire • Irony • Situational Irony
Situation Irony (box 4) • Example: Flyers hanging around OAHS advertising a backpack sale. Why ironic?
