Teaching English in Chiang Mai is A Lucrative Idea Chiang Mai was established by King Mengrai and it became the capital city of the kingdom, replacing Chiang Rai, in 1296. After it was attacked multiple times by the Burmese people, it was abandoned during 1776-1791 and Lampang became the temporary capital. Only after Thai king Taskin drove the Burmese out, Chiang Mai became a part of Thailand, then Siam. Come the modern day, Chiang Mai is a happening tourist attraction with more than 1.5 million foreign tourists visiting this area every year. Add to that the 1 million native Thai people who live in that area and it is the third largest city of Thailand. This city is also the educational hub of Thailand. It is home to many fine Thai universities and there are several foreign language schools as well, in this area. For this reason, many foreigners are teaching English in Chiang Mai and many foreign students are taking it up as a part-time job as well. Foreigners who want to teach English in Thailand are attracted to Chiang Mai due to the buzzing nightlife, the young and vibrant young population and the cultural life of the city.
