“ Lava flow inches closer to homes in Hawaiian community ”.
E N D
Each passing hour, lava from Kilauea Volcano is inching closer to homes in Pahoa on Hawaii's Big Island. The dark ooze has swallowed up fences, flowed over a cemetery and neared major roads. In some places it's chest high. By early Tuesday, the lava was about 70 yards from the closest home and moving in a northeast direction. It was flowing 8 to 11 yards per hour, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. Hawaii officials haven't issued a mandatory evacuation yet. But many residents have already chosen to leave on their own. The Hawaii County Civil defense agency has rebuilt two gravel roads to give residents escape routes from the lava flow. Power company crews are installing new 70-foot-tall poles with heat resistant protection to raise cables higher off the roads. The lava flow is not exactly a surprise though. It started June 27 and has advanced about 13 miles since then. Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes.
In Other News Six months after a passenger ferry sank off the coast of South Korea, a victim's body was discovered inside the wreckage on Tuesday. The body was found on the fourth floor, according to the South Korea joint task force, in charge of the search. The body has not been retrieved yet -- and it is unclear whether the victim is male or female. Nine victims remain missing after the ferry sank on April 16, killing at least 295 people. The underwater search has continued in the months following the disaster, depending on weather conditions. Officials have said they will not stop the search operation unless families wish otherwise. But questions have swirled over what could happen to the search as winter approaches.
