Causes of the wide longitudinal signatures of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events.

Causes of the wide longitudinal signatures of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events STEREO has given us a new tool to look at the longitudinal dependence of SEPs. SEPs are seen over a wider range than expected from the size of the corresponding CMEs. Yet the particle dropouts seen in small impulsive flares indicate that cross-field diffusion is not large. Two possibilities are that the acceleration happens over a wider region, maybe correlated with sympathetic activity as seen on SDO, or that the accelerated particles spread out very near the surface of the Sun.
