  2. CO2’s role Lagged 800~1000yrs behind temperature. (Monnin et al. , 2001; Caillon et al. , 2003) CO2 plays a key role in amplifying the initial orbital forcing? (Stott et al. , 2003) CO2 may be controlled in large part by the climate of the southern ocean. (Stott et al. , 2003; Monnin et al. , 2001) Possible explanation: change in the vertical ocean mixing or sea-ice cover changes, or a biological mechanism, such as atmospheric dust flux and ocean productivity. (Toggweiler et al. , 2006; Martin et al. , 1990; Broecker et al. , 1998; Stephens et al. , 2000) A CO2–climate lag time of 800 years is consistent with the mixing time of the deep ocean. (Stott et al. , 2003)
