Indiana Animal Research Report CHIPMUNK Chase Sams Mr. Morris November 25, 2013
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION • 25 different species of chipmunks • Small members of the squirrel family • Little, energetic, and fast • Pudgy cheeks, stripes, large, glossy eyes, and bushy tails • Gray or reddish brown • Dark and light stripes on the side of their face and down their back and tail • Smaller chipmunks are 7.2 to 8.5 inches and weigh 1.1 to 1.8 ounces • Larger chipmunks are about 11 inches and weighs as much as 4.4 ounces • Very popular in storybooks and movies in Hollywood
EATING HABITS • Chipmunks usually find their food on the ground in places that are hidden • Mostly eat insects, fruit, nuts, berries, seeds, and grain • Stuff food into their big cheek pouches and carry it to their burrow or nest to store • Chipmunks hibernate but wake up to eat food they have stored in their burrow • Chipmunks are often considered pests because they eat fruit and nuts from peoples garden or farm
HABITAT • There are twenty-one species of chipmunks in North America and five species in Canada • The eastern chipmunk is very commonly found in Indiana • Live mostly in the woods or in low shrubs or pine forests and rocky places • Chipmunks usually live alone • Their burrows have long tunnels that connect different areas • Their sleeping areas are kept very clean as nut shells and fecesare stored in unused tunnels
ENEMIES • Chipmunks have many enemies and are always looking out for predators • Some of their enemies include hawks, coyotes, weasels, martens, snakes and foxes
BABIES • Chipmunks are mammals • Their babies are born live from their mother • Chipmunks have 2 mating seasons, February to April and June to August • A female chipmunk is pregnant for only one month and then gives birth to a litter of 4 to 5 babies • The babies leave their mothers in 6 to 8 weeks • Chipmunks are very independent so when the babies leave their mother, they immediately begin finding food to store for the winter
PROTECTION • Chipmunks are prey to many animals • Burrows will have more than one way to get out so they can escape from their enemies • Chipmunks travel where there are a lot of ground plants and cover so they are protected and won’t be seen by enemies • Chipmunks make a repeated shrill or birdlike chirp when they sense a threat to scare off enemies and warn others of a threat
