Clothing Design • Whether you make your clothes or buy them, you have many design choices to make • Design is a plan that is used to put something together • Design – good – overall effect is pleasing!!!! • Every part looks like it belongs together • By clever use – play up your good features & conceal those that are not • Right design - thinner, taller, thinner or heavier
Elements of Design • Elements of Design – color, line texture and form • If right elements of design used – success • Apply when making choices
Color • Very exciting part of our lives! • Major influence on how you select clothes • Reflects the your moods, looks & feelings • Right color – skin will glow & eyes will shine • Best features can be highlighted when you use your best colors • Turquoise is the color of 2010, fashion experts say
The Language of Color • Hue – name given to color (yellow, red, blue) • Value – the amount of lightness or darkness in a color • Different values result by adding black or white • Tint – add white to a color • Pink is a tint of red • Shade – made by adding black • Navy – blue • Maroon - red
The Language of Color • Intensity – brightness or dullness of a color • Bright colors – intense (bright green (kelly green) • Pale colors – softer & less intense (mint green) • vs
The Color Wheel • Color wheel – shows how colors relate to each other • Red, blue&yellow–primary color • No other colors can be mixed to make them • All other colors can be made by primary colors • Yellow + blue=green • Red+blue = violet(purple) • Red+yellow=orange • Green, violet, & orange = secondary colors • Intermediate colors – combination of a primary & a secondary color • Blue-green, red-orange, yellow-green

Color Schemes • You can create one • Three common: • Monochromatic • Based on variations of a single hue on the color wheel • Analogous • Combining related colors (colors next to one another) • Complementary • Combination of two colors directly across from each other
Warm & Cool Colors • Warm colors – colors related to red, orange & yellow • Advancing colors – seem to come forward • Cool colors – colors related to blue, violet, & green • Restful, calm, relaxing • Receding colors - seem to move away or stay in the background • You can look thinner in cool colors than in warm colors
Neutrals • White, gray & black • Use alone or combination w/others • When used w/a small amount of a color, the other color looks brighter • White – reflects light – objects appear larger • Clothes will feel cooler • Popular for warmer climates • Black - absorbs light – objects appear smaller • Clothes feel warmer • Often worn during the winter/cold temps

Colors for your skin tone • Most important consideration • Five basic skin tones: • Black, red-brown, yellow-brown, yellow, & white • How to find out: • In daylight, drape different colors of fabric over your shoulders in front of a mirror • Study the effects of each color has on your skin • Tints & shades = different effects • Color = overpower – try a duller intensity • You LOVE a color that does not go with your skin • Still wear it, but keep away from face, skirts, pants
Colors for your Hair • 2ndconsideration • Right colors – hair – glow • Four main hair colors • Blond, red, brunette & black • Colors much lighter or darker than hair will emphasize the hair color!!! • Rich brown or glossy black hairs looks darker with light values • Brown outfit will not emphasize brown hair • Since contrasting colors make each seem brighter – red hair looks great with a soft green color
Colors for your Eyes • Various eye color • Some eye color (hazel, blue-green & gray) seem to change color when various colors are worn • They reflect the garment that is worn • Brown eyes – seldom influenced by color • Blue eyes – become brighter or are dulled by other blues • A large amount bright blue colors dull blue eyes, a small amount makes them brighter • color intensity – important factor when choosing color
Colors for your Body Shape • Use colors to play up or conceal certain body features • Warm, bold, white, light & bright colors tend to make a area seem larger than it is. They draw attention • Wide belts in light colors will make a waist line appear smaller • Dull or less intense colors should be used in areas you would like to hid • Short– look taller in one-color outfits. • no belt – makes you look taller • Eye will move in a continuous line down the body • belt – same color as garment
Colors for your Body Shape • Combining colors – avoid contrasts – short • Colors stop & start abruptly • Shirt – one color pant- another color – causes a break in the vertical line of the body • More slender – grayed, dull & dark colors • Avoid looking dull • Bright color in accessories
Colors & Your Personality • Personality has an effect on the color you choose – you may not be aware of it • The way color make you feel – part of personality • Warm colors – outgoing, active • Feel cheerful, energetic – bright colors • Others may feel awkward • Plain-colored clothes – may be quiet & reserved
Line • Gives direction to a design • Structural– created by the seams in a garment • Decorative– are part of the fabric design or trims added to the garment • Rows of button • Lines can be vertical (up & down), horizontal (across), diagonal (slanting) or curved (part of a circle) • Used separate or in a combination
Selecting Your Best Lines • Lines = illusions • Vertical lines – carry eye up and down, sliming effect, taller effect • Horizontal lines – carry eyes from side to side, make you look shorter & heavier • Wide belt – horizontal line • Diagonal lines – add interest to a design • Slanted more up than down – seem taller • Curved lines – give a soft, relaxed look
Texture • How a fabric feel when you touch it and how it looks on the surface • Bulky fabric – add weight • Dull fabric – decrease visual weight or size • Effects color – shiny textures-colors seem brighter
Form • Refers to a shape of an object • Clothes helps to create your shape (silhouette) • Clothing producing a full form – larger & heavier (wide-leg jeans)
