  1. Drexel University Student Center Group #15 Advisor: Professor Aspasia Zerva Members: Nathan Zipay Matthew Neary Brett Molash Steven Natale Courtney Dantone

  2. Overview • Problem Background • Problem Statement • Green Buildings • Site • Architectural • Structural • Foundations • HVAC/Electrical/Plumbing • Budget • Schedule • Proposed Design Alternatives

  3. Problem Background • Drexel has increased enrollment and student housing • Demand for: • Places to eat • Additional recreational activities • Convenience stores • Study facilities

  4. Problem Background • Campus lacks commercial space • Pharmacy • Restaurants • Movie Theater • Variety is limited • Campus lacks green space • Princeton Review 2007 • #2 for “Campus is unsightly, tiny, or both”

  5. Green Building • Buildings that are energy efficient and environmentally friendly • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) point scale system • Six categories of certification criteria • Water Efficiency • Energy and Atmosphere • Materials and Resources • Sustainable Sites • Indoor Air Quality • Innovation in Design

  6. Green Building • Certification Levels: • LEED Certified • LEED Silver • LEED Gold • LEED Platinum • Benefits over conventional building construction • Green Roof will enhance Drexel’s green space and scenery

  7. Site • Located at existing Myers Hall Dormitory • Corner of Powelton and 33rd Streets • Originally intended to be a temporary housing facility • Proposed to be demolished as part of Drexel’s expansion plan

  8. Site • Investigation of Myers Hall completed to see what materials could be recycled/reused

  9. Design Goals • Demolish Myers Hall • Construct a multi-functional student building • Qualify for LEED Certification

  10. Site • Expand “green” spaces on campus • Green Roof • beautiful area for students • a view of center city • more efficient building • Student survey was distributed

  11. Student Poll Results • Top 3 choices for fast food: • Wendy’s • Q’doba • Panera Bread • Top 3 choices for sit-down restaurant: • TGI Friday’s • Applebee’s • Ruby Tuesday • Top 3 choices for activities: • Movie Theatre • Bowling Alley • Outdoor Basketball

  12. Architectural • Must blend with adjacent building facings • Material options for facade • Light brick • Copper facing • Building must meld with community • No more than 3 stories tall • Views • Shadows • Foundations

  13. Architectural Program • Type of space • Occupancy expectations • Volume of occupancy • Proximity to other spaces

  14. Structural • Sustain load capacities of structure as if separate entities. • Bowling alley design live load ~ 75 psf. • Movie theater design live load ~ 100 psf. • IBC 2006 Section 1607

  15. Structural • Proposed green roof will have a design dead load varying from 40 – 100 psf. • Dead load from proposed green roof depends on: • Vegetation type • Soil depth • Drainage • Insulation • Waterproofing design

  16. Structural • Earthquake, Wind, and Snow • Philadelphia region: • Seismic design exposure category “B” • Design wind speed of 90 mph • Design anticipated snow load 30 psf • IBC 2006, Section 1613, 1608, 1609

  17. Foundation • Foundation will need to support the above structure and transmit loads to underlying soil • Deep pile foundations not common for low rise buildings in Philadelphia area depending on a soil investigation. • Anticipate a shallow foundation • more cost effective • susceptible to settlement • IBC 2006 Section 1805 requires: • minimum depth of 12 in. below grade • minimum width of 12 in

  18. Mechanical • Identification of Problems • Need for efficiency in energy and cost • Multi-use building is unique • Comfort Levels of individuals • LEED standards

  19. Mechanical

  20. Mechanical (Electrical) • Proper design can reduce energy consumption by 50%! • Energy cost reduction • Sources of innovative systems • Daylighting • Automated lighting control • Solar panels • Energy-10 analysis estimates 6385 kWh/day or 4308 kWh/day

  21. Mechanical • Plumbing/Drainage • Innovative waste water technology • E & S • Innovative runoff system • Rainwater collection • Ice ball storage for cooling Source: www.cryogel.com

  22. Mechanical • Green Roof: Intensive vs. extensive • Advantages • Thermal resistance • Energy efficient HVAC • Reduces runoff up to 90% in summer and 40% in winter

  23. Budget (Design Costs)

  24. Budget (Project Costs)

  25. Design (Total Project Budget)

  26. Project Schedule
