ALABAMA: HISPANICS FACTS…. • Hispanics represents about 4.1% of Alabama’s total population. • AAMU’s UEFNEP program serves 4 counties highly populated with Hispanic families: Marshall @ 12.8% , Morgan @7.8%, Limestone @5.7%, and Madison @4.7%. • The health status of Hispanics is consistently lower than blacks and whites for all age groups. • Hispanics and other minorities are at greater risk for obesity, high levels of blood sugar , blood pressure and blood cholesterol.
Who is the Target Audience? Hispanics: Adults and Youths Pregnant and young Hispanic mothers with children 0-5 years. Hispanic Youth ages 6-14 from low-income families.
PROGRAM DELIVERY • Paraprofessionals are trained to deliver nutrition education under the supervision of • nutrition specialists • coordinators • project manager
Extension is Making a Difference Providing a series of nutrition education classes Creating awareness through flyers, seminars, and health fairs Educating via use of food demonstrations
