  2. Cities and Region • Three major cities in Alaska are Sitka, Anchorage, and Fairbanks. • Alaska belongs to the Northwest region of the United States. • The capital city of Alaska is Juneau.

  3. Population and Nickname • The population in Alaska is 710,231 people. • The nickname for Alaska is Last Frontier.

  4. State flag, State bird and State tree • The state bird is the Willow Ptarmigan. • The state tree is the Sitka Spruce.

  5. The state of Alaska is a vast, sprawling expanse on the north-west tip of America. • Fourteen of Alaska’s mountains are higher than any others in the United States. Geography

  6. History • Alaska became a state on January, 13 1959. • The Alaska native claims Settlement Act was passed. • In 1989 Tanker in Prince William Sound caused the largest oil spill in US history.
