Slope Intercept Form y = mx + b
When you have a real world (word problem) that requires you to write an equation in slope intercept form, there are two things that you want to look for:
Example 1: R & T Pizza has a sale on all their pizzas for $10. Extra toppings are $1.50 extra. Write an equation in slope intercept form that describes this situation. Step 1: Slope intercept form: y = mx + b Step 2: b = $10 (amount is constant) m = $1.50 (this amount will change depending on the amount of toppings you buy.) Step 3: y = mx + b y = $1.50x + 10
Example 2: Jon walks 4 miles per day. Next week he wants to walk an extra 2 miles per day. Write an equation in slope intercept form that describes this situation. Step 1: Slope intercept form: y = mx + b Step 2: b = 4 (amount is constant) m = 2 (this amount will change depending on the amount of miles he actually walks.) Step 3: y = mx + b y = 2x + 4
You do: You are in Tucson, AZ and a taxi company charges $5 for just using the taxi services and an additional $0.75 per mile. Write an equation that you could use to find the cost of a taxi ride in Tucson, AZ. b = $5 (amount is constant) m = $0.75 (this amount will change depending on the amount of miles.) y = mx + b y = $0.75x + $5
You do: A plumber charges a fee of $75 to make a house call. They also charge $30 per hour for labor. Write an equation that you could use to find the amount a plumber charges for making a house call based on the number of hours of labor. b = $75 (amount is constant) m = $30 (this amount will change depending on the amount of hours it takes them.) y = mx + b y = $30x + $75
Key concepts Slope of a line measures the steepness of the line. Rise means how many units you move up or down from point to point. On the graph that would be a change in the y values. Runmeans how far left or right you move from point to point. On the graph, that would mean a change of x values. in y in x

Example 1: Find the slope of the straight line that passes through (-5, 2) and (4, -7). Plug in x and y values into slope formula Simplify The slope of the line is -1.
Find the slope of the straight line that passes through (1, 1) and (5, 1). The slope of the line is 0.
Find the slope of the straight line that passes through (3, 4) and (3, 6). The slope of the line is undefined.
