scaffolding scaffolding introduction Falls of persons and objects from scaffolding are a major cause of accidents in the construction industry, and in some cases the scaffold itself falls! All are preventable
scaffolding scaffolding Main points
scaffolding Scaffolding must be planned according to requirements including loads, platforms, safe passage, access / egress, etc.
scaffolding Scaffolding should only be erected, adjusted and dismantled by a competent (properly trained) person.
scaffolding Scaffolding must be maintained and this is the responsibility of all employees. Do not interfere with scaffolding and report any faults or concerns immediately
scaffolding scaffolding other points to consider
scaffolding safe access / egress must be provided – this will normally be ladders. These must be secured and extended sufficiently beyond platforms for safe mounting / dismounting
scaffolding Workers should never climb scaffolding
scaffolding Scaffold platforms must be fully planked out where practicable, and should provide a passage for people of at least 450mm in width.
scaffolding Where stores are stacked on the scaffold platforms the load weights must be taken into consideration. Ensure that the 450mm passage is maintained, do not stack materials to high, and stack near standards as opposed to centre of bays
scaffolding Where there is a risk of a fall, then guard-rails, intermediate guard-rails and toe-boards are required
scaffolding Purpose built loading bays should be used with gates. If guard-rails have to be removed to facilitate loading they must be replaced immediately
scaffolding Scaffolding must be suitably tied to structures. Scaffold ties should not be removed unless by a trained person and if required. Don’t do it yourself – only a trained scaffolder should do it
scaffolding Do not use incomplete or unsafe scaffolding – report it and use signs to prohibit its use.
scaffolding Scaffolding should be formally inspected after initial erection, after significant alteration, after any destabilising event, and at least once every 7 days. The findings should be recoreded
scaffolding scaffolding conclusion Be a leader, follow safe procedures
