Pueblo Indians • Location: natives of the Southwest deserts, particularly New Mexico • Had elaborate irrigation system to draw water from rivers to grow corn • Lived in adobe houses • Dried cubicle shaped mud stacked one on top of the other • Usually built under cliffs
Mound Builders • Located in the Eastern half of the USA and southern Canada • Ohio River Valley • Built huge ceremonial and burial mounds • Cahokia site of largest and most influential ancient Native American City • East St. Louis today • Covers 2,200 acres, about 80 mounds today
Located in present day Ohio Called Serpent Mound 5 ft high, 20 feet across and 1,330 feet long
Eastern “Woodland” Indians • Located Northern Eastern part USA & Ohio River Valley • Lived in logged homes, resided in the forest
Used 3 sister farming • Grew corn, beans and squash all together • Corn grew in a stalk providing a trellis for beans, beans grew up the stalk, squash broad leaves kept the sun off the ground and thus kept the moisture in the soil
Croatan • Small Native American group living in the coastal areas of NC • Part of the Lost Colony
5 civilized tribes • Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole • Lived in the SE USA • Later be forced to relocate (Oklahoma) • Adopted many of the colonists customs • Had pretty good relation with the white settlers • Had constitutional gov’t

Iroquois Confederation • A group of 5 tribes in New York State • Each tribe independent • Only meet to discuss matters of war/defense • Based on matrilineal • Authority and possessions passed down through FEMALE line
Hiawatha • Legendary leader of the group • Given credit with joining together the five tribes • From Mohawk tribe • Born around 1525
Longhouses • long rectangular homes • made by building a frame from saplings, or young trees. • covered with bark sewn together • There was a long hallway with rooms on both sides
