  1. Walk-In • Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. • Turn in plant book. • Answer in complete sentences: • What occurs during germination?

  2. Answer • During germination, the seed coat softens up from soaking in water, and the plant inside emerges as a shoot pushing up through the soil.

  3. Today’s Learning Target • SWBAT describe the structure and function of each part of a flowering plant.

  4. Plant Structures

  5. Structure and Function of a Bike • What are some structures (parts) of a bike? • What functions (jobs) do they have?

  6. Structure • A structure is a part of a system. • Structures provide organization for an object (living or non-living). • Examples of plant structures: root, stem, leaf, flower.

  7. Function • Function refers to the job or work that it does. • Example: One function of a stem is to hold a plant up.

  8. What is a flower? • A flower is the part of the plant that makes the seeds.

  9. There are four main parts of a flowering plant. flower leaves stem roots

  10. Root • The roots • absorb water from the soil • anchor the plant • absorb minerals from the soil. root

  11. Stem The stem supports the plant and transports water and minerals. stem

  12. Leaf • The leaves use sunlight to make food for the plant. • They also let in carbon dioxide through tiny openings. leaves

  13. Flower The flower helps the plant to reproduce by making new seeds. flower

  14. SHOCK WARNING! All plants have MALE and FEMALE parts!

  15. They reproduce by the process of pollination. • Pollen from the MALE part of one plant must transfer to the FEMALE part of a different plant.

  16. The MALE part that produces pollen. stamen pistil The FEMALE part that gets fertilized by pollen, and grows seeds.

  17. The pistil has 3 parts stigma (female part) Is sticky Catches pollen style Tube that pollen travels down ovary Contains eggs

  18. The stamen (male part) anther Produces & contains pollen filament pollen Yellow powderFertilizes eggs

  19. Other parts of the flower petals sepal Colorful, bright petals attract pollinators like bees and birds. Like small green leaves, they protect the flower before it opens. receptacle End of flower stalk
