Scene I • Horrible ingredients make up the witches’ brew. • 3 apparitions: an armed head (symbol of Macduff) • a bloody child (symbol of Macduff at birth) none of women born shall harm Macbeth • a child crowned (symbol of Malcolm), should be king “vanquished be”, “until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him” – the forest has to move to his castle and come against him (camouflaged army) • Will Banquo’s sons be kings – 8 kings + Banquo holding a mirror.
Scene 2 • Lady Macduff thinks husband is a coward, traitor to their family • Ross tries to justify his leaving • Child thinks mom betrayed his father and that’s why he left a messenger (who flees when danger arrives) • Lady doesn’t understand why it is happening
Scene 3 • Macduff goes to Malcolm, Malcolm is unsure if he can trust him (gives him a loyalty test) they have a common goal • Ross comes to tell Macduff family dead • 10,000 men from England • Ross tell him bad news • Macduff feels as though Macbeth cannot feel sorrow because he has no children of his own • Wants to fight Macbeth personally
