CONTACTS • Volunteer supervisor- Dr. Will Acree • Receptionist- Jennifer Vincent
WHAT IS MARS? • Memory Assessment and Research Services was established to: • provide affordable memory screenings to the general population • advance the scientific understanding of memory and memory deficits • educate the public about memory disorders and their treatment
WHO IS MARS? • Mars was formed by Dr Julian Keith, Dr. Len Lecci and Dr. Dale Cohen. • Dr. Keith is a neuroscientist who specializes in memory and memory functioning. • Dr. Lecci is a clinical psychologist who specializes in psychological assessment. • Dr. Cohen is a cognitive psychologist who specializes in the mathematical modeling of cognitive functioning.
WHO IS MARS? • Dr. Will Acree is the clinician who administers the assessment tests and provides personalized feedback that includes information regarding your memory, personality, mood, and other cognitive functions. • Lauren Suggs is the other clinician who administers the tests and provides feedback. She also is the counselor who provides the patient or their family the therapy they need to help them deal with their diagnosis.
MISSION • MARS was formed to provide the community the most sensitive, valid, and reliable memory assessments available. • Their goal is to determine if someone has or is likely to develop in the future some form of memory problem and direct them to effective treatment. • MARS recommends anyone aged 55 or older consider getting a reliable memory assessment because dementias become increasingly prevalent with age.
SERVICES • The MARS memory assessment includes: • a comprehensive memory test • a general test of cognitive functioning • a personality profile • a measure of current mood • a clinical interview • counseling sessions (if needed)
HISTORY • MARS was formed in January of 2005 • The population they serve is anyone aged 55 or older. There are times when someone younger needs an assessment if they have other medical problems that may cause memory loss, such as lupus.
ADVANTAGES OF VOLUNTEERING AT MARS • The chance to become familiar with the types of tests that are administered: MMPI (personality test), MAS, WAIS……. • The opportunity to become a Certified Caregiver for the Alzheimer’s Association • The privilege of attending the clinical meetings with Dr. Keith, Dr. Lecci, Dr. Cohen, Dr. Acree and Lauren Suggs to evaluate patient cases. • The possibility to score personality tests and light research if Dr. Acree or Lauren needs information on a specific topic.
RECOMMENDATION • I would recommend this site for anyone who has a special interest in memory loss or the geriatric community. • Be prepared to do some tasks such as filing, making folders and copying.
