Advertising makes us buy things we don’t need Advertising makes us feel inadequate by using images of successful people with perfect lives Advertising enables independent television channels, radio stations, newspapers and magazines to exist (that’s where they get most of their money from) Adverts for children’s products make it difficult for parents to say no to toys, sweets, games etc, and encourage kids to want unhealthy foods Adverts can be very entertaining Advertising convinces us that something is useful and desirable when really it isn’t

Think of a well-known brand and identify 5 values that you think best summarizes this brand

  5. What is a brand? • Name a variety of brands from different sectors. For example, Coca-cola • What products and logos do you associate with the brand? • How do they achieve this? Is it through adverts, slogans, campaigns, celebrity endorsement? • Which brands do you dislike? • What do you dislike about these brands?
