Sikh community Customs • Guru Nanak set up three important customs. • Sewa- voluntary work • Langar – a community meal. • Sangat – social gathering • These customs help strengthen the Sikh community and help Sikhs keep to the teachings of Guru Nanak
Sewa • This is service to others. • It is an important part of Sikh life. • Sewa are selfless acts. • Usually Sikhs perform sewa by cleaning the gurdwara (Sikh temple) or helping those less fortunate. • Giving money is also another form of sewa, the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, said that Sikh’s should give one tenth of their earnings to the poor. • Guru Nanak also said that you could also perform sewa by telling people about the goodness of God. This did not mean convincing them to be Sikhs.
Langar • This is an open kitchen. • It was set up by the third Guru, Guru Amar Das who was inspired by Guru Nanaks teaching that everyone could eat together equally. • Men and women help prepare vegetarian food and then everyone sits on the floor and eats with each other. • There is a reason people eat sitting on the floor can you think of why?
Sangat • This is a Sikh gathering. • This is where Sikhs meet to express their spirituality. • This helps them keep a sense of community. • It also helps them to keep their faith.
Equality • Anyone can join in these Sikh customs no matter what race, colour, gender or background.
