THE BEGINNING…. • Inception: 2010 • The Project was named as KRANTIJYOTI after • late Smt. Savitribai Phule, paying a tribute to her • exemplary contribution towards women • empowerment.
Results of survey done from , onElected Women Representatives(EWRs) Their educational standard is not very high. The EWRs are bogged down by social, political and family pressures. They are constrained by superstitions, traditions and family obligations. They are low on self esteem and are reluctant to govern because of inferiority complex.
THE STATE ELECTION COMMISSION INNOVATION… • Hon. State Election Commissioner, Maharashtra, • Mrs. Satyanarayana decided to design and • implement a suitable training programme to • empower these women. • The innovation was of a non residential training • programme taken to the doorsteps of EWRs, not • only as a corrective measure for fulfilment of the • constitutional mandate of free and fair elections • but also to empower these women and set them • as future role models.
The 10 Selected Pilot Districts • Thane • Sindhudurg • Satara • Pune • Nashik • Nanded • Amravati • Solapur • Kolhapur • Wardha
TRAINING OF THE CORE TRAINERS (TOCT) 50 Core trainers from the 10 Pilot Districts were trained at MIT, Pune
TRAINING OF THE TRAINERS (TOT) Block level trainers are trained in their respective districts
TRAINING OF THE EWRs Block level and District Level trainers take up the trainings of the EWRs.
PILOT STUDIES In association with Symbiosis Institute, Training of 25 Tribal women of Thane district was conducted. Training was also imparted to 191 EWRs and 75 Sanghatikas in Selu Taluka of Wardha District.

New focus areas proposed • SOCIAL SECURITY FOR WOMEN – Module to be prepared from the United Nations’ Charter for Violence against Women. • Raising Women’s contribution to combat against calamities like draught/famine (Burning issue of Maharashtra)

KRANTIJYOTI AHEAD IN FUTURE…. HANDHOLDING REFRESHER TRAINING AFTER 6 MONTHS
KRANTIJYOTI IN THE RAJIV GANDHI PANCHAYAT SASHAKTIKARAN ABHIYAAN
LOCAL HANDHOLDING • Local mentors(Aanganwadi worker/ASHA • workers etc.)will be • chosen and trained • 10 EWRs per mentors for regular • interaction. • Monthly informal meetings would be • conducted • Mentors will be provided an honorarium • of Rs.500/- per month.
NGO HANDHOLDING • Local NGO would provide the • EWRswith supportive and • informative help • They will provide necessary inputs • which will help the EWRs in solving • their common issues. • Such selected NGO volunteers will • be given an honorarium of • Rs.300/- per month per EWR.
CALL CENTRE • Call centers will be set up for the EWRs • for their day-to-day difficulties. • Pre-advertised helpline number • Conference callfacilities. • Forwarding calls to the concerned • authorities. • All calls will be recorded for research and • analysis process • 500 to 1,000EWRs shall be covered per • seat withthe cost of approximately • Rs.20,000 to Rs.22,000 per month.
REFRESHER COURSE • After 6 months of the first training, • A 3-Day refresher course for these • EWRs shall be arranged. Evaluation • and Appraisal Studies will be done. • These women will be given • elementary introduction to computers • for their basic understanding. • Wider knowledge of Panchayati Raj • Administration/Schemes/Acts & • Rules will be given to these EWRs.
REFRESHER COURSE • The EWRs will be asked to indicate 5 • government schemes which their village • requires on priority basis. A camp with the • officials of the concerned government • department will be arranged in villages to • expedite their actual assistance. • Research and documentation would be • undertaken simultaneously. Women Councilors • who show confidence will be picked up as role • models and will be treated as resource persons • for further training.
