Math Textbook Adoption Presented by Therese Wetherington and Teacher Leaders Jan 24.2014
History • 2010- Release of CCSS for reading and math • 2011- 44 states, District of Columbia & US Virgin Islands adopted CCSS
Purpose • Use a set of tools to ensure consistency across reviewers, and promote discussions about newly developed mathematics curriculum materials. • Tool #1: Mathematics Content Alignment • Tool #2: 8 Mathematical Practices • Tool #3: Overarching Considerations Equity, Assessment & Technology
Tool Creators • Council of Chief State School Officers and National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics • national team of educators with expertise in mathematics • mathematics education • school administration
Tool #1-Content Trajectory • Determine the extent to which the Core Content Standards for Mathematics are included in the mathematics curriculum materials. • Determine the extent to which Core Content Standards for Mathematics are sequenced appropriately in the mathematics curriculum materials. • Determine the amount of time allowed for each standard.
Critical Areas • Tool 1 does not exhaust the standards within each grade or category, but focuses on important domains or standards with within and across grades to provide a representative analysis within a reasonable time.
Criteria • Coverage refers to the degree to which the curriculum materials attend to the content of a particular standard. • Balance addresses the degree to which the mathematics content is developed with a balance between mathematical understanding and procedural skill in ways that are consistent with the standard
Tool #28 Mathematical Practices • To determine the extent to which the mathematics curriculum materials reflect and involve students in the Mathematical Practices.
Students should be… pattern sniffers experimenters describers tinkerers inventors visualizers conjecturers guessers
Tool #3Equity, Assessment & Technology • To determine how the program influenceslearning for all studentswith regards to linguistic, ethnic, racial, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds; the role of mathematics in society and culture, and contributions of various cultures to the advancement of mathematics. • To determine the extent of how mathematics relates to other subjects, and the opportunities for authentic tasks • To determine the kinds of assessments (formative and summative), types of data, method to monitor progress, and types of strategies available to address specific areas. • To determine the extent of embedded support for elements of technology consistently within and across grades.
