4. The Fortified City of Saint-Malo During the Middle Ages, Saint-Malo was a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance River.

History • Became notorious as the home of the corsairs, French privateers, and sometimes even pirates. • From 1590-1594, Saint-Malo declared itself an independent republic, taking the motto “Not French, not Breton, but Malouins.” • Jacques Cartier, credited as the discoverer of Canada, lived in and sailed from Saint-Malo.

6. History (continued) • Modern Saint Malo traces its origins to a monastic settlement founded by Saint Aaron and Saint Brendon early in the 6th century. • The name is derived from man that is said to have been a follower of Saint Brendon named Saint Malo.
