  1. Long Term Outcome of Hemiarthroplasty of Femoral Neck Fracture in Elderly Patients at Sardjito General Hospital and PKU Bantul Hospital Suwardi, T*, Yuwana, S ** *Resident, ** Staff Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology Sardjito General Hospital Medical Faculty, GadjahMada University, Yogyakarta

  2. Introduction • Femoral neck fractures are common injuries among elderly people, every year 3600 Finns fracture their hip for the first time1 • The most common treatment for a displaced femoralneck fracture in the elderly is hemiarthroplasty2 • Many studies have reported goodfunctional results in hemiarthroplasty using the traditional Austin Moore Prosthesis3 Parker MJ: Fractures of the neck of the femur. Trauma. 2008;10(1):43-53. Donaldson AJ, Thomson HE, Harper NJ, Kenny NW: Bone cement implantation syndrome. Br J Anaesth. 2009;102(1):12Skinner P, Riley D, Ellery J. Displaced subcapital fracturesof the femur : A prospective randomised comparisonof internal fixation, hemiarthroplasty and total hip replacement.Injury 1989 ; 20 : 291-296

  3. Objective • This study aim to review the longtermoutcome results of hemiarthroplasty of femoralneckfracture in elderly patient at Yogyakarta, Indonesia using The Oxford Hip Score

  4. Material and Methods • Research design: A descriptive retrospective review of data • Location: Sardjito General Hospital and PKU Bantul Hospital, Yogyakarta • Subject: 180 patients with a femoral neck fracture • Period: January 2002 - September 2011

  5. Material and Methods • Inclusion criteria: • A femoral neck fracture patient • Aged over 60 years • Treated by Hemiarthroplasty with an Austin Moore Prothese. • Exclusion criteria: • Patient not responded to the study • Patients died of co-morbid conditions that are not related to the surgical intervention.

  8. Analysis

  9. Discussion • 11 (55%) of the patients treated with hemiarhroplasty with Austin Moore Prosthesis in Sardjito General Hospital and PKU Bantul Hospital showed favorable results in Oxford hip score grading system.

  10. Conclusion • Hemiarthroplasty is considered the optimal treatment for elderly patients with displacedfemoral neck fracturesand produces satisfactory results4,5,6 • Further study with direct observation of those patients is needed to evaluated this result clinically and radiologically. Bjorgul K, Reikeras O. Hemiarthroplasty in worst cases is better than internal fixation in best cases of displaced femoral neckfractures: a prospective study of 683 patients treated with hemiarthroplasty or internal fixation.
