Who wants to be a POLITICIAN! Who wants to be a
Government: The group of people we elect to make the big decisions in our community & country.
Local Government Bexley is divided into small areas called wards. Each ward elects 3 local councillors. Our school is in a ward called Blendon & Penhill and these are our councillors. All the councillors vote for a leader, and the leader of Bexley Council right now is Teresa O’Neill. The Council makes decisions about local issues.
London Government London is divided into boroughs. Two boroughs join together and elect one person to speak up for them at the London Assembly. Our London Assembly member for Bexley & Bromley is James Cleverely. We also elect someone to be the Mayor of London. At the moment the Mayor is Boris Johnson. The Mayor makes decisions about London issues, like transport, the police and the Olympics.
National Government Britain is divided into constituencies. Every constituency elects on Member of Parliament (MP) to speak up for them in the Houses of Parliament. There are 650 MPs in Britain. Our MP is James Brokenshire. The national government is made by the political party which wins the most MPs at an election. The leader of this party becomes our Prime Minister. At the moment he is David Cameron. The Prime Minister makes decisions about national issues.
