Spanish-American War (1898) • Imperialist War against the Spanish empire • Causes: • 1. Yellow Journalism newspapers printed sensationalist headlines to get the American public in favor of a war with Spain • The newspapers wanted the U.S. to take Cuba for its sugar and tobacco
Causes of the War • 2. Explosion of the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba • People assumed that Spain blew up the ship, and this led President McKinley to declare war
Spanish-American War (1898) • The U.S. defeated the weak Spanish empire in 4 months • More American soldiers died from malaria than in battle
Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders • Teddy Roosevelt recruited a group of soldiers called the Rough Riders • Roosevelt used his fame to get elected Governor of New York in 1898, then Vice President in 1900. • He became President in 1901 when McKinley was assassinated

Cuba The U.S. promises to give Cuba independence, but it has a heavy influence • Platt Amendment allows the U.S. to intervene in Cuba when it thinks it is necessary
