  10. #1. UC Entry Level Writing Generally, transfer students complete this via their admissions writing/English requirement of 2 writing courses. Satisfaction of this requirement will be notated on your transcript under “University Requirements” If your transcript does not have this notation, please make an appointment to see an academic counselor after Fall quarter grades have been posted on your transcript.

American History and Institutions • One year of U.S. History, or one semester of U.S. History and one semester of U.S. Government in high school with a “C” or better; or • A score of 3, 4, or 5 in AP U.S. History; or • A score of 550 or higher in the SAT II American History exam; or • One year of college-level U.S. History, or one course in U.S. History and one in U.S. Government with a “C” or better • NOTE: IGETC does not automatically satisfy this requirement.

IGETC • If you have completed the IGETC requirements and have been certified by your community college, you will only complete the following GE course at UCI: • Upper-division writing • Partial IGETC is also accepted. Your community college must send us the certification sheet. • You must order this from your school. This is not automatic.

  16. Category I: LD Writing Generally, transfer students complete this via their admissions writing/English requirement of 2 writing courses. There are, however, a few schools whose courses do not satisfy the entire lower-division writing requirement. In those cases, you must complete the courses at UCIrvine.

  17. Category I: UD Writing • Upper division writing 1) must be completed with a grade of “C” or better and 2) must be taken at UCI. • CS, SE Majors - Required to take ICS 139W. • In4matx (OIT) Majors – Requirement will be completed through Informatics 162W for those pursuing the OIT specialization. • CSE Majors – Requirement will be completed through CSE 181CW. • BIM, CGS, In4matx (HCI) Majors – May take any upper division course with a “W” suffix (ex: ICS 139W, Social Science 185W, Engineering 190W, etc).

Category II: Science and Technology (Major Specific!) • CS Majors (per 2011-12 catalog): Select a three-course combination from one of the following: • Chemistry 1ABC and 1LC-LD or H2ABC and H2LA-B-C • Physics 3ABC & 3LB-LC • Physics 2, 7C, and 7D or 7E with corresponding labs. For the 2013-14 catalog, you will need the following: Two courses approved for General Education category II except those offered by CSE, Economics, ICS, or Mathematics. University Studies courses can be used with the approval of the CS Vice-Chair for Undergraduate Studies. • CSE Majors: Complete 18 units of basic science courses including Physics 7C, 7LC; Physics 7D/LD, and the remainder from the approved Science Elective list. • BIM Majors: Per the 2013-14 catalog, the 3 required courses will already be completed through ICS 21, 22, 6N. If you are following the 2011-12 catalog, then you will need one more course from this category. • IN4MATX Majors: Per the 2011-12 catalog, 2 of the 3 required courses will already be completed through ICS 21/In4matx 41 and ICS 22/In4matx 42 . The third course can be anything that falls under this category. Per the 2013-14 catalog, the 3 required courses will be completed through ICS 31-32-33. • CGS & SE Majors: The 3 required courses will be completed through ICS 21-22-51 (or ICS 31-32-33).

Category III: Social and Behavioral Sciences • You must complete 3 quarter (or 2 semester) courses for this category. • Can overlap with category VII and category VIII of the UCI General Education requirements. • Category III courses include such topics as: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Linguistics, Psychology, and Sociology

Category IV: Arts & Humanities • You must complete 3 quarter (or 2 semester) courses from the following areas: • Arts • Art History, Studio Art, Dance, Drama, Fine Arts • Humanities • Classics, History, Humanities, Philosophy • Literature • Classics, English and Comparative Literature, French, Humanities, Russian, Spanish • Interdisciplinary Studies • African-American Studies, Women’s Studies • Can overlap with category VII and VIII of the UCI General Education requirement • CGS majors will receive credit for 1 course via their degree requirement of Film & Media St. 85A or 85C

  21. Category V: Quantitative, Symbolic & ComputationalReasoning All Bren School majors will satisfy this category via their degree requirements.

Category VI: Foreign Language • Language competency other than English must be demonstrated through one of the following options: • 3 years of high school language or its equivalent with a C or better in both semesters • Score of 3 or higher on the AP Language exam • Score of 570 or better on SAT II language exam; a score of 500 or better on the SAT II Modern Hebrew exam (Note: test score format has changed recently) • Completion of an approved course of study through EAP • Exemption by examination available in some languages, check out www.testingcenter.uci.edu. • Completion of 1C level of a language taught at UCI or the equivalent at another college or university

  23. Category VII: Multicultural Studies Complete 1 course from the list of General Education courses for this category. Courses can potentially overlap with categories III and IV of the UCI General Education requirement.

  24. Category VIII: International/Global Issues Complete 1 course from the list of General Education courses for this category. Courses can potentially overlap with categories III and IV of the UCI General Education requirement. • Along with the courses from the approved list, this may also be fulfilled by: • one quarter participation in the Education Abroad Program and corresponding course. • completion of the 4th year equivalent of high school foreign language with a C or better in both semesters • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP language other than English exam • 620 or better on the SAT II language other than English exam; 540 or better on the SAT II Modern Hebrew exam • Exemption by examination available in some languages. Taking courses outside UCI • Courses may be completed outside of UCI to satisfy general education and elective courses • You must take all major courses at UCI • Students may petition to take up to four approved UC-transferable lower-division classes, except for writing classes, at a community college or other university. • Check with http://www.assist.org/ to make sure community college courses will transfer!

ICS 90: First Year Seminar • 1 unit course taught by Bren School Lecturers Richard Pattis and David Kay • No grade earned, P/NP only • Goal is to help new students transition to UCI • Focus will include community building and mostly surveying the technical areas within departments in ICS, via talks by faculty on their research • Mandatory for CS and Informatics majors only • CS Majors: you can take this course later this year

Bren School of ICS Academic Honesty Policy • The following examples are considered as academically dishonest: • Copying during an exam or quiz • Copying a person’s homework • Sharing code during a lab assignment • Sharing notes and problem solutions • Any joint effort when individual effort is required. • Do not assume anything, ask questions.

Bren School of ICS Academic Honesty Policy • What could happen if you are caught or suspected of academic dishonesty? • An automatic F in the assignment, quiz or exam, OR • An automatic F in the course, OR • Expulsion from the University (this may occur if you have been caught more than once.) • A letter/report will be placed in your student file within the school and at the university level for at least two years.

University privacy policy • By law, the ICS Student Affairs Office and other UCI officials may not release any student information such as GPA, grades, fees paid, attendance, transcript, or any other academic information to ANY ONE without consent from the student. • Please see the UCI General Catalogue Appendix for more details.
