  2. Panama is in Central America, touching the northern part of South America.

  3. Currency • The currency is officially the Panamanian balboa, but the US$ is also used. • They have a fixed exchange rate of 1:1.

  4. How does their government work? • They have a representative democracy, much like the US. They do, however, have differences. • They executive and legislative branch representatives for 5-year terms, and an independent appointed judiciary. • They have 2 vice presidents, 72 members of their Legislative Assembly, and only 9 members of their Supreme Court. • Everyone above 18 is required to vote, but there are no consequences for not doing so.

  5. What is a major environmental problem? • Panama does well protecting their environment. • However, the cocobolo tree, an endangered species, is still being cut down today. These trees must have documentation to be transported. Logging it is regulated by law and selling it is prohibited.

  6. What efforts are being made to solve this problem? • The National Environmental Authority (ANAM) found 2 containers full of this wood and confiscated it in Manzanillo, Colon, just this past November. Both containers were 40 feet long and filled with these logs.

  7. Do you think these efforts are successful? • These efforts do work at times, as you may be able to tell by the news story from November. It is probably more likely than not, though, that these efforts fail. Typically, this would be difficult to perform a valid confirmation.
