5. Personification Personification- Giving human qualities or actions to something that is not human. Example- The trees waved goodbye as our school bus passed by. Non Example- The trees swayed in the wind.

6. Hyperbole- is exaggerated statement that creates an idea in a readers mind. It is used to emphasize a point or add excitement and humor. They are not meant to be taken literally. Example: It’s so cold, I saw polar bears wearing jackets outside. Example: Her heart stopped when the door flew open.

7. What is a metaphor? A metaphor compares two things that are not alike. A metaphor does not use like or as. In a metaphor, one things is said to be another. Ex: The lake was a mirror. Why do we use metaphors?

8. Similes are a comparison of two things that are not usually thought to be alike. A simile uses the clue wordslike or as to make the comparison. Ex. Her hair was as shining as the sun. A simile is an example of figurative language. Figurative language provides a more “colorful” way of expressing something.
