Textbooks vs. Leisure Reading • Using prescribed strategy of reading/study techniques provides a more successful method of reading textbooks; • enhance understanding and retention of material. • reduce the amount of time one will need to spend studying the material immediately prior to the test. • time is spent actually understanding the chapter when it is read initially. Question (30 seconds) • What are the questions which logically arise from the survey? • Change headings into questions • Vocabulary meanings • Cause/effect relationships • Questions concerning italicized words or phrases gshepherd
Read (3 – 5 pages) • The first reading • Purposeful, but rapidly • Purpose is to gain meanings to your questions • Get main ideas • Establish continuity of thought gshepherd
Recite (3-5 pages) • Ask yourself, “What have I read?” • Answer as completely as you can • Think carefully about the material before proceeding to the next page or unit gshepherd
“Rite” (3-5 pages) • Quickly write down the main ideas of the selection • Important facts • Answers to questions in your own words • Use outline form • Cornell Outline gshepherd
Re-Read (entire chapter) • Ready now for your second reading • More of a slower pace • Further clarity and ideas • Pick up unanswered questions • Look for details in this reading gshepherd
