What is “Opening Doors to Excellence”? • There are 3,000 students on some form of probation here at Chaffey College • A program created at Chaffey College to better serve the needs of students who are experiencing academic difficulty • Opening Doors to Excellence (ODE) is a program that provides students with a “second chance,” and allows them to work their way off probation by providing support and instruction
Why are you here? • Two Types of Probation • Academic Probation --Attempted 12 or more units with less than a 2.0 Cumulative GPA • Progress Probation - Attempted 12 or more units, but 50 percent of those units are W, NC, I, NP - GPA can be above a 2.0 In some cases - Student must have more completed units then W, I, NC, NP
Three levels of Probation • Level One: First semester when the students cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 for academic and when the completed units is less than or equal to attempted units for progress. Students must attend an academic success workshop through counseling department • Level 2: A student has at least two consecutive semesters of academic or progress probation (this is when Chaffey puts a block on your registration, because it Is the last step before you are dismissed)
Three Levels of Probation • Dismissed Standing: Three consecutive semesters on academic or progress probation. At this stage, students are dismissed from Chaffey College for one semester • After sitting out the semester, You have to reapply and enroll on a restrictive special contract with Ricardo Diaz and get permission to register each semester until you get off probation • If you don’t follow through with the special contract, you may get dismissed again for one year • You are Blocked Every Semester, and Must see Ricardo Every Semester To Remove Your Block
Options for Students • Opening Doors Program (recommended) • Petition to waive Program • Refuse Services
Opening Doors Program • Students receive 1 year (2 semesters) of immunity from academic dismissal • Enhanced student services: Easier access to see a counselor, academic advising, peer support, and support staff to help connect you to campus resources • Peer support from other classmates
Enroll in College Success Course • Guidance 507 (3 units) • Help students understand how they got on probation • Develop strategies for overcoming the personal challenges that get in the way of student success • Attend time management, diagnostic, test preparation, using resources, and learning style workshops • Become aware of the programs and services at Chaffey College, particularly the success centers and how they can help the student succeed
How to receive services from Opening Doors to Excellence • Complete Opening Doors Contract • Make an appointment with Ricardo Diaz to develop an educational plan (Ed Plan) Ricardo’s Office is in the counseling office in the SSA building, the NEW ADMISSIONS BUILDING, check in at the front desk • Provide ODE a “Tentative Schedule” for the upcoming semester (Mandatory in order for us to remove registration block) • Enroll in mandatory Guidance 507 course the following semester • Utilize the Success Centers as part of guidance course
Petition to Waive Services • Petition may be granted if you will gain good standing at the end of the current term, meaning your GPA will be at 2.0 or higher or you will have 51 percent of completed units (letter grades) • To petition, see me after the contract part of today’s information session and we will evaluate this together • We will not approve students that don’t have a reasonable chance of getting off probation in one semester • You are accepting full responsibility and your GPA does not rise above a 2.0 GPA or you will not have 51 percent of completed units by the end of the current term, then you advance to dismiss standing
Refusal • Not exactly the best option • If you refuse you must fill out the “refusal of services form.” You will accept full responsibility of your probation status • Completing the refusal form will only allow you to register for the upcoming semester and Does Not” clear you from academic or progress probation • Having a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 or over 50 percent of your units completed without W’s, I’s. or NC’s can “clear” you from academic or progress probation • If you end up on academic probation again, Chaffey College Will dismiss you • If you are dismissed and you appeal your dismissal status, the college will look upon your refusal in a negative light when deciding whether or not to allow you to continue on a special contract
