  1. WELCOME TO “Take Your Parent to Math Night!”

  2. FACT FLUENCY Why do we use a “timed test” curriculum? *To give students a tool to practice their facts at home and at school *To have a universal program to use across grade levels for consistency *To differentiate students fact fluency to increase automaticity *It only takes about 10 minutes per day

  3. **Rocket Math is a structured program for sequential practice of math facts.**The students practice and learn few enough facts at a time so they can simply remember or memorize their answers.**facts are introduced in sets of two and their reverses.**there are 4 operations-addition, subtraction, multiplication and division Rocket Math

  4. 10 **You’ll have one minute to complete this page. Be sure to do as many as you can!**All you have to do is copy the number into the box.**Please do not start until I say go! “Pencils up to show us you’re ready!”**Count how many boxes you completed and write your score on the bottom left of the paper How fast can you write?

  5. How fast can you write?

  6. **This assessment determine how fast you can write. Which in turn determines your goal for your 15 second, 1 minute and 2 minute timed tests.**Count how many boxes you completed and write your score on the bottom left of the paper How fast can you write?

  7. After your goal is determined, you now know the score you need to either achieve or beat!!! Determining Your Goal

  8. 15 second**The 15 second assessment determines what set within each operation each student should start on. A-E, F-J, K-O, or P-W**This is usually given once or twice within each operation.1 minute**This assessment is given on a daily basis—typically mon-thurs and students progress through each set at their own pace. (40 problems on each)—Use goal to determine passage.2 minute timed tests**This assessment is given on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to track students progress through the operation they are currently working on. Once they pass the 2 minutes assessment twice, they may move onto the next operation There are 3 different assessments given throughout the school year

  9. To make this more challenging for you, please use your non-dominant hand!!! We also don’t normally assess 13s.  15 Second Test

  10. After taking both 15 second test, go back through and grade your work and write your score on the line next to “Number of problems correct. If you met your goal on A-F, then grade g-k. If you met your goal on G-K, then we’d give you the next 15 second test until we find the point that you are not meeting your goal. Once the set is determined, you are now ready to practice and then take your first 1 minute test! Scoring your 15 second test

  11. When Practicing:Students get into pairs-You and your partner need ***the answer key***a practice testOne person practices and one person listensPRACTICE PERSONRead each fact with the answerStick to the same rhythmif you make a mistake or hesitate, go back 3 facts and continue againLISTENERListen to your partner for errors--Incorrect fact?Hesitation?—Go back 3 facts and then keep on going! *Each person practices for 3 minutes and then everyone switches roles.**THEN IT’S TIME TO TAKE YOUR 1 MINUTE TEST! PENCILS UP SO WE KNOW YOU’RE READY! Practice First!

  12. Fold your paper in half if needed. You need to complete the bottom half as your 1 minute timed test.  1 Minute Timed Test

  13. *After taking the 1 minute test, it is your responsibility to grade your own test. *If you think you met your goal/passed, then you’ll give your teacher your test to check over. This way we ensure you are ready to move onto the next set. *If you didn’t pass, you can take your test home to practice tonight so you are more prepared tomorrow!*If you haven’t passed a particular set after 4 attempts, and you are more than a few away facts away, back up 2 sets and try again. We call this the ZIPPER EFFECT! Next time, you’ll ZIP right through!*You also need to write the date on your rocket next to the set you took today!!!! Scoring your 1 minute test

  14. Record the date next to the letter of the set that you took today! If you passed, be sure to color in the letter on your rocket!  Write on your Rocket!

  15. 7 +2 9 Have you been practicing and you are just not moving forward? Here are a few tips!**Practice at home just like we do at school! Be sure to practice and take some practice tests!!!! Be sure to set the timer**Make flash cards for the facts that are new to the set you are on. Hang them on your mirror in the bathroom and look at them while you are brushing your teeth. Have a set in your bookbag so you can practice on the bus or in the car!**Visual picture Games--Dice games/Domino Games**First in Math-GYMS**Counting objects**try practicing at school with a different student or the teacher. Are you stuck?

  16. You have 2 minutes. Remember, your goal is twice what your 1 minute goal is. You need to pass this to move onto the next operation.  2 Minute Timed Test

  17. *After taking the 2 minute test, it is your responsibility to grade your own test using a pen. *Your teacher will read the answer key to you line by line. Grade your test and then count how many you got correct and write your score at the bottom.*Your goal each week should really be to beat last weeks score!!!! Even if it is only by a few facts!*Then you need to graph your score so we can track it each week and see our progress!*Once you met your actual goal, give your folder to your teacher and say, “I think I passed!!!” Scoring your 2 minute test

  18. Be sure to write the date and your score. Then fill in the bar graph . Graphing your 2 minute test score!

  19. 3 levels of learning:1. Accuracy-We can solve facts correctly if we take our time and concentrate.2. Fluency-Practice and solve quickly without making mistakes.3. automaticity-solve quickly without errors and without much conscious attention.-We don’t have to stop and think about it!**We want students to get to the point they can solve higher level thinking and more complex problems instead of having to stop and ponder the answer to simple math facts. Automaticity
