  2. Physical Property • A characteristic that distinguishes one type of matter from another and can be observed without changing the identity of the substance

  3. Examples • Different colors • Shapes • Hardness • Densities • Melting points, boiling points, freezing points

  4. Chemical Property • A property that describes how a substance changes into a new substance

  5. Examples • Flammability • Reaction to acid, base or water to change temperature or produce a gas

  6. Physical Change • A substance changes forms but still keeps the identity of the original substance

  7. Examples • Tearing paper • Painting an object • Phase changes – melting, freezing

  8. Chemical Change • Substances undergo a process where they turn into a new substance – they can’t go back to the original

  9. Examples of Chemical Change • Flammability • Acid rain • Rust • Leaves changing colors in the fall • fireworks
