Safe at Home Review What did we learn this year?
We learned that fire fighters are our friends. Even though they dress funny to do their job, we should never be afraid of them and we should never hide from them
We learned what an emergency is • something dangerous • you need help right away HELP!
We learned that if we have an emergency, like an accident or a fire, we should call • We should be very calm and tell the operator our name, address and what our emergency is.
We learned that we should know how to use every phone in our house
3 4 2 5 1 6 7 0 9 8 • And some of our phones might have a dial that looks like this
We learned that fire is very hot, and creates smoke that is very dark. It is not like we see on television
We learned that it takes three things to cause a fire: • Heat - or something hot - like a match or a space heater • Fuel - or something that will burn - like papers or trash or furniture • Oxygen - which is the air all around us that we need to live
We learned that there are good fires - if fire is used carefully
We learned that every house should have at least one smoke alarm on their ceiling. It can tell us if there is smoke in our house, even before we can smell it. • Do you know what your smoke alarm sounds like? Push the button to see!
We learned that we should all have a home escape plan that everyone in the home practices together in case of a fire in our home.
When our smoke alarm sounds, we should GET OUT and STAY OUT. If there is smoke, we should crawl low under the smoke until we are outside.
tree streetlight mailbox swingset • We should have a meeting place outside so we know that everyone is safe. • Once outside, we can call 9-1-1 to report the fire
Once we are outside, we should NEVER go back inside for anything. • Not our favorite toy • Not our favorite pet • not even a family member. If you practiced your plan together, they will know what to do and how to get out safely
Remember - things can be replaced, but you cannot. Get Out and Stay Out!
We learned that matches and lighters are adult tools - not toys. We should never play with them. • Just like a hammer is an adult tool • So is a lighter
We learned that there are many things in our homes that are hot or can get hot and can burn us.
We need to stay away from appliances like coffee pots • What are some other appliances that are hot or can get hot that we should stay away from
We need to stay away from open flames like campfires • What are some other open flames that we should stay away from
We need to stay away from hot liquids like coffee. • What are some other hot liquids that we should stay away from
We also need to be careful when using our microwaves and eating the food we cook in them. Cool food before eating it.
If we do get burned, run cool water over the burned area for at least 10 minutes, tell an adult right away, and get medical help if needed.
What if we get too close to something that is hot and our clothes catch on fire. What do we do?
Stop where you are • NEVER RUN!
Drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and • Rollback and forth until the flames are out.
If the fire is on your sleeves, put your arms at your sides and roll over and over until the fire is out • If you are with someone who catches on fire, tell them not to run, and help them put the fire out by rolling them on the ground or using blankets or water to put out the fire.
We have learned very important fire safety lessons this year
