7th Grade Reading:Vocabulary Development, Fluency, and Comprehension • TEKS: • (B) use context (within a sentence and in larger sections of text) to determine or clarify the meaning of unfamiliar or ambiguous words • (2) Reading/Vocabulary Development. Students understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. • (E) use a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus (printed or electronic) to determine the meanings, syllabication, pronunciations, alternate word choices, and parts of speech of words. • (A) summarize the elements of plot development (e.g., rising action, turning point, climax, falling action, denouement) in various works of fiction;
Who are my learners? • My classroom will consist of 7th grade students, some will be ELLs. • There will be various reading levels within the class
Learning Objectives • Remembering: The student will be able to determine the meanings of select words in a text using context clues • Comprehension: The student will be able to use an online dictionary to find word meanings • Understanding: The student will be able to explain the elements of plot development
Objectives • Applying: The student will be able to identify the elements of plot development within a fictional story • Synthesis: The student will be able to create a new falling action and conclusion following the climax
Learning Materials • The students will be given: • A fictional short story I have chosen for them to read • A handout with 20 vocabulary words found in the story • A handout for plot development • A microphone to create their podcast
Learning Activities: • I will show a PowerPoint presentation on the elements of plot development within a fictional story. • Group Work • The students will be put into groups, mixing the students with high and low reading levels
Learning Activities: • The students will read the story and determine within in the group the meanings of 10 words using context clues • Using an online dictionary they will find the meanings of the other 10 words • They will fill out the handout I gave them
Learning Activities: • The students will discuss and determine the rising action, turning point, climax, falling action, and conclusion of the story • They will be asked to fill out the handout
Learning Activities: • I will ask the students to create a new falling action and conclusion for the story using at least 10 of the vocabulary words they have learned. • As a group they will all create a Podcast, using the microphones, and tell the ending of the story they created • The students will share their stories with the class
Evaluation • The students will be evaluated based on: • the handouts they were given • the correct usage of the vocabulary words in their stories • A test over the elements of a plot
