Background • Italian born • Immigrated to the U.S. • Anarchists • As Italian immigrants and anarchists, both adhered to a movement that advocated relentless warfare against a violent and oppressive government.
Massachusetts Factory ROBBED • 2 People were murdered in the robbery • Sacco and Vanzetti were blamed • WHY???? • Guns were similar • Targeted by Nativists • Assumed they were both violent
Controversial Trial • Witnesses said that S & V were NOT in the city at the time of the murders • Men owned similar guns to the murder weapons • BUT: Ballistics evidence said that they WERE NOT the murder weapons
BOTH MEN FOUND GUILTY!!!! • Jury deliberated for 5 hours • Both men found guilty of murder • Both men sentenced to death by ELECTRIC CHAIR • 6 Appeals
Were they really guilty? • Research later indicated (1961) that Sacco probably was guilty of the murders and probably had Vanzetti's help in the robbery, although we are not completely sure • VIDEO
