  2. Why an SSR program? • Studies show that struggling readers read less than ten pages of text per day. • SSR improves not only reading achievement but also attitude toward reading. • Students with positive reading skills will improve their writing skills.

  3. Reading is A Skill Ask any athlete, musician, orator, teacher, dancer, singer, or a chess champion, “What do I do to be good?” Answer: Practice

  4. What are the benefits? • SSR allows the student to read long enough and often enough so that the act of reading becomes automatic. • Since SSR is informal and free of strict assessments, student can gain a new perspective on reading—as a form of recreation.

  5. Additional Benefits • Students will also gain a positive attitude toward reading and therefore become lifelong readers! • Better readers score higher on standardized tests. • Reading practice declines markedly after fifth grade.

  6. Facts • On average, high-school students spend about as much time in literature-based practice as kindergarten students. • Schools graduate students that have practiced reading an average of only seven minutes per day over their entire academic career.

  7. Facts • Students in the top 5% read 144 times more than student in the bottom 5%. • Students in private schools read 67% more than public school students. • Reading makes a better reader.

  8. Benefits • Reading improves spelling. • Reading improves vocabulary. • Students learn an average of 45 words with each novel they read. • Word meaning is picked up 10 times faster by reading than intensive vocabulary instruction.

  9. Benefits • Reading improves writing. • Research shows that both style and complexity of sentence structure is increased as the amount of reading increases.

  10. Every Wednesday SSR time will be after 5th Period from 1:25 – 1:50 in 5th bell class Start looking for interesting reading materials!
