The first war • The First Anglo-Chinese War (1839–42), known as the First Opium War. • fought between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Qing Dynasty of China. • It marked the end of China's isolation and the beginning of modern Chinese history. • In the end the first opium war weakened the state and civil revolt in China
Trading goods • During the 19th century, trading goods from China was extremely profitable. • it became uneconomical to trade in low-value manufactured consumer products • Due to the Qing Dynasty's trade restrictions, trade was only allowed to take place in Canton
Political factors • British obtained Hong Kong as their crown colony • Americans came to negotiate and signed the treaty of Wangsia with china, which provided the illegality of the opium trade. • Five treaty ports were up for trade
Geographical factors • Hong Kong opened up five treaty ports in which foreigners could live and conduct business. • France and the U.S. gained similar concession • Foreign settlements were established in the new treaty ports • International trade relocated from Guangzhou to shanhai • Russians seized border areas in: -maritime provinces -river region -the Ili valley in Turkestan
The second opium war • the Second Anglo-Chinese War, the Second China War, the Arrow War, or the Anglo-French expedition to China • rapid growth of imperialism and expansion of their overseas markets &the establishment of new ports of call • In June 1858 the first part of the war ended with the 4 Treaties of Tientsin which opened eleven more ports to Western trade • the Xianfeng emperor and his entourage fled Beijing bringing The Second Opium War to an end.
