  2. beginning • Christopher Columbus was born in Italy in 1451. • He was the son of a weaver and had not much schooling. • In about 1476, Columbus settled in Portugal, Spain.

  3. later • In the 1480’s, Columbus started planning a voyage to find out a sea route to Asia. • The Portuguese king refused to give money for Columbus’ voyage.

  4. Christopher’s first voyage • The ships set sail in August 3,1492. Christopher Columbus reached the Bahamas on October 12. • Christopher reached Cuba on October 29. On December 6, he reached the island Hispaniola.

  5. Later voyages • Isabella and Ferdinand were pleased with Christopher and his discoveries. Soon they sent Columbus back on a second trip. • On Christopher’s second voyage, he had 17 ships and about 1,300 men, and it was from 1493 to 1496.

  6. end • Columbus opened the world to the Americas to his fellow Europeans. • In 1476 Christopher Columbus settled in Portugal. • Columbus was in Spain in November 1504. • Christopher died in May 1506. • When he died, he was still convinced that he made it to Asia.
