Anastasia Fact vs. Hollywood By Maddie Barr & Emily Cain 3rd Hour
Introduction • Anastasia is an animated movie that came out in 1997 • It is an interest of high school students because it is a movie they grew up with and it reminds them of their younger days
Plot • Anastasia is given a music box from her grandmother at a ball • Rasputin places a curse on the Romanovs to destroy them • Anastasia and her grandmother are able to escape from the palace thanks to help from a servant boy names Dimitri • Anastasia fails to make it on a train with her grandmother
Plot • Ten years later, Anya sets off for Paris to find her family • She goes to Saint Petersburg and gets stuck • Dimitri and Vladimir decide to help her if she will impersonate the missing Anastasia • They teach Anya how to act like Anastasia
Plot • Rasputin chases after Anya because she is Anastasia • Dimitri realizes Anya is Anastasia • While trying to convince the dowager empress, Anya realizes she is Anastasia • Rasputin attacks • Dimitri saves Anastasia • Dimitri and Anastasia elope
Character Accuracy • Vladimir and Dimitri are fictional • Rasputin’s role in the downfall of the Romanovs is overstated • Anastasia never reached the age of 18, but the movie character seems to come from Anna Anderson (Anastasia Imposter)
Chronology Accuracy • Anastasia was 15 in 1916 and not 8 as the movie claims • Quote used by Sigmund Freud after his studies were completed even though he did not complete his studies until the 1930s
Language/Social Values • Language spoken by the Romanovs was Russian, but in the movie it was English • Social values are depicted fairly accurately
Conclusion • The movie is historically inaccurate for the very reason that most of it is set during Anastasia’s life after the revolution, but in real life, Anastasia did not survive the Russian revolution
